Cialis is the brand name of the drug Tadalafil used for treatment of erectile dysfunction. The drug was developed by the biotechnology firm ICOS and marketed by Lilly ICOS. Penile erection is caused by high penile blood flow due to relaxation of penile blood vessels and the smooth corpus cavernosum muscles. The process is stimulated by release of Nitric Oxide from nerve endings and endothelial cells that synthesizes cGMP in smooth muscles. It relaxes smooth muscles and as a result blood flow to corpus cavernosum increases causing erection.

But cGMP is degenerated by the presence of phosphodiesterase type 5 and is responsible reduced half life of cyclic GMP. Tadalafil inhibits the action of PDE5 thus ensuring sustained erection. But the above mechanism to work requires the triggering of NO without which no cGMP is synthesized. It means that without sexual stimulation and release of Nitric Oxide Generic Cialis has no effect.

Dosage:
Recommended dosage of Cialis is 10 mg but it has to be taken only once a day. The dosage can be between 5 mg or 20 mg per day depending on the response and other effects. With aim of avoiding the situation of planning the time of sexual activity and taking the drug, a low dosage of 2.5 mg to 5 mg that can be taken every day has been tested for its long term effects and is approved by European Commission.
